TMC Tops Attendance League Table

The Marvell College Tops Attendance League Table The Department for Education (DfE) recently published data comparing secondary school attendance with that of 20 similar schools nationally covering the period from the start of the 2024-2025 academic year in September 2024 to Tuesday 8th April 2025. It is with great pleasure that I can report that The Marvell College placed 1st of the 21 schools for overall attendance and for persistent absence. More key details are listed below Our attendance is 3.9% higher than the median attendance of similar schools. Our persistent absence is 11.7% lower than the median of similar schools. FSM pupils’ attendance is 5.6% higher than that in similar schools. Non-FSM pupils’ attendance is 2.2% higher than that of similar schools. SEN is pupils’ attendance is 7.1% higher than that of similar schools. Non-SEN pupils’ attendance is 3.9% higher than that if similar schools. Our attendance for all groups of pupils is higher than the comparable time last year with the biggest increases coming for our most vulnerable pupils, FSM (2.9%) and SEN (4.4%). As a school, we place great emphasis on the importance of regular attendance at school and our own data, highlighted in the table below, shows that the higher pupils’ attendance to our school is, the more successful they are. Recently published data has also shown pupils with attendance of 95%+ are TWICE AS LIKELY to gain good passes in english and mathematics compared to similar pupils with attendance of between 90-95%. I am very proud of the work pupils, parents and carers, and our staff have done to improve attendance to school in our community and look forward to this trend continuing over the coming weeks, months, and years.

Fairer School Index The Fairer School Index seeks to provide a more accurate ranking of schools by not simply taking Progress 8 as an absolute measure, rather it also considers factors such as FSM, EAL, SEND, gender, ethnicity, postcode, etc.  In the latest data published last week, The Marvell College has moved up 1214 places in the national rankings placing us around the top 25% of schools nationally, 3rd in Hull, and 6th in Hull & The East Riding.  The Marvell College is the third highest rising school in Yorkshire and the Humber.  Oasis Academy Wintringham, North East Lincolnshire (1437) - up 1256 places Outwood Academy Carlton, Barnsley (971) - up 1235 places The Marvell College, Kingston upon Hull (854) - up 1214 places   This story has been picked up by the media (Best secondary schools in Yorkshire according to Fairer Schools Index) (Hull's Marvell College climbs over 1200 places in league table as new rankings released - Hull Live): When asked for comment, our Headteacher, Mr Matthews said: “The Marvell College and its staff are proud to work on behalf of, and to represent, everyone in their community and are very pleased that research is being conducted that recognises not just the hard work we, and many other schools in our local area, do to support young people, but also the inequalities within the current accountability systems.  At The Marvell College we pride ourselves on our inclusive approach to education and on the high-quality support pupils receive here helping them to be “as good as anyone, anywhere”.” We know all members of our school and HCAT community will share our pride in this recognition of the hard work, ambition, respect and courage shown by all our pupils and staff.
