The Importance of Reading

Our School Library

Our school library is located on the first floor open area and contains a vast range of fiction and non-fiction texts for all abilities. We are committed to listening to our students and ensuring that new texts are ordered based on feedback on what books they would like to see more of. The library is a safe and comfortable space that can be used at break times, before and after school to read and use the computers for independent study.

Accelerated Reader

The Accelerated Reader programme is another tool we use to improve reading across the school. Every student has access to the programme in order to take quizzes on the books that they have read and track how their reading is improving over time. We offer a variety of prizes and competitions for participation on Accelerated Reader to celebrate the successes of our students’ reading across all year groups.

Form Time Reading

Reading time during registration is an excellent opportunity given to students to ensure that they are able to read regularly and participate in the Accelerated Reader competitions. Each tutor group has their own class reader, which is read and discussed on Literacy mornings in form time. Time is also given for students to read their own reading books independently, either brought from home or loaned from our school library.

How can parents support our students in their reading?

We strongly encourage parents to take an active role in ensuring that their child is reading regularly. Completing 20 minutes of independent reading at home each day will accelerate reading progress dramatically. Therefore, we encourage parents to support their child to partake in 20 minutes of independent reading each day.
