At The Marvell College, beginning teachers (BTs) are welcomed into a caring and nurturing environment where their professional growth is genuinely valued. From the moment they step into the building, BTs are treated as full members of staff, with the same respect and trust as experienced colleagues. This ethos helps beginning teachers quickly establish themselves within the school community, and pupils come to recognise and respect them as their teacher from day one.
BTs are immersed fully into school life from the very start of their training experience. They are guided and supported in every lesson by experienced host teachers who share their expertise and offer practical advice to help trainees grow in confidence and competence. We pride ourselves on the high standard of our mentoring provision; our mentors are highly skilled specialists who go above and beyond the weekly mentor meeting to ensure every BT feels well supported, encouraged, and challenged to continually improve.
Support for BTs at The Marvell College goes beyond the basics; it is rooted in a culture of continual learning and professional development for all. Training is part of our culture here at The Marvell College. As a staff body, we learn together and strive for excellence in everything we do. BTs benefit from a collaborative atmosphere where they can share ideas, observe best practice, and learn from colleagues who are genuinely invested in their success.
A large part of our staff is made up of legacy BTs from a range of different providers, many of whom have stayed on and progressed into leadership roles within the school. This is a testament to the supportive, ambitious environment that The Marvell College provides. BTs leave us not only with the skills and experience to succeed but also with the confidence that they are part of a professional family that values and nurtures their talent from the very beginning. For the last two years, all BTs who have trained with us have secured employment for their ECT year 1.
If you are interested in training with us, please read the information below about our partner organisations, or contact Miss K. Kidd-Rossiter (Deputy Headteacher, Teaching and Learning) via. admin@themarvellcollege.com
| Dominick Clark GORSE SCITT Lead Mentor for The Morley Academy, Horsforth School, Mount St Marys, Ron Dearing UTC, Marvell College, Hessle High School | "It is a privilege to collaborate with The Marvell College, with whom we have maintained a longstanding partnership. Together, we have developed and supported numerous trainee teachers. The Marvell College offers exceptional support with the Professional Mentor consistently going above and beyond in assisting trainees both within and outside the classroom. A common sentiment expressed by trainees at The Marvell College is the immense support they receive from their mentors, host teachers, and the Professional Mentor. We take great pride in our partnership with The Marvell College, as we work together to prepare future educators to reach their fullest potential. We look forward to seeing former GORSE SCITT trainees who have secured employment at The Marvell College go on to be future mentors." |
| Chloe Offei-Manu Teacher of English | "My experience as a trainee at The Marvell College was incredibly positive and supportive. From the outset, I felt welcomed as part of the team and was provided with a clear structure to guide my development. The mentoring system was particularly strong—my mentor offered regular, constructive feedback and always made time for reflection and planning, which helped build my confidence and improve my classroom practice. I was also given access to a wide range of CPD opportunities tailored to my needs, including behaviour management, curriculum planning, and assessment for learning. The staff across departments were always approachable and willing to share advice or resources, creating a collaborative environment that encouraged growth. Overall, the provision for trainees at Marvell is well thought out, nurturing, and designed to help new teachers thrive." |
| Nicola Bryant Teacher of Design and Technology | "I just wanted to say thank you for allowing me to complete some of my training at The Marvell College. Although my time at The Marvell College was short, I learned so much in my time training at the school. The staff throughout the school were so warm and welcoming and everyone was willing to give me their time to help me develop my skills and answer questions I had to improve my practice. The design and technology department are amazing, and you can feel how much every member of staff loves what they do. Their dedication to the students and willingness to go above and beyond, is evident in the way the lessons are delivered, and how confident the students feel in the subject. The department is well structured, and you can clearly see that the head of department has worked hard to ensure a positive working environment, with clear expectations and guidance for staff to feel supported. They made me feel so welcome and went to a lot of effort to make me feel part of the team. The students I taught were polite, respectful and a credit to the school, with many keen to tell me about what makes Marvell a great school to be at. I was impressed by how the students conducted themselves and saw very little behavioural issues which I feel is largely down to the consistent approach I saw all staff had, which is one of the main things I will take into my ECT Training. I was also lucky enough to be able to speak to the students in the ARC and see the incredible work that is done by the team in supporting the students in this provision." |
| Jennifer McCreedy Teacher of English | "Completing my second placement at The Marvell College has been a genuinely formative and inspiring experience. I feel privileged to have been part of a school where high expectations, support, and a culture of care are so clearly embedded. I am especially grateful to the English department, whose dedication, passion, and compassion stand at the forefront of closing the disadvantage gap in reading and writing. Under their guidance, I have not only developed my skills and confidence but have grown into a more reflective and purposeful practitioner. I leave with sincere gratitude for the opportunities, professional growth, and sense of belonging I have experienced here, which will undoubtedly shape my teaching career going forward. I have become a reflective practitioner through the regular opportunities to develop and grow within the ITT package delivered at Marvell, which served as a genuine enhancement of key areas within the training model — not a meaningless repetition of my provider’s input, but a purposeful, school-centred experience that deepened my understanding of effective teaching, behaviour management, and responsive assessment through application in The Marvell College’s specific setting. I will always be grateful for the lessons learnt and growth fostered within department and whole school, leaving was truly heart-breaking but I will always hope, sometime in the future, our paths may cross again." |
| Dale Birling Teacher of Science | "From the moment I walked into The Marvell College, I was treated like a member of staff, not as a trainee. I was given access, promptly, to all of the systems I needed to be able to do my job. All ITT trainees were given dedicated time each week, as a group, with the professional mentor. This gave us time to share experiences, talk about key elements of pedagogy or just offload. Every member of staff at The Marvell College, without exception, was friendly, approachable, and always made time for me. From the teaching staff, to the LSAs, the SLT and the year teams. Any questions about students, procedures, practice were all fielded in a way which made me feel like they hadn't answered the same questions a thousand times before. I got the opportunity to lead on three parent's evening, along with my host teachers, which was invaluable experience, having not attended any parent's evening prior to my placement at The Marvell College. The support from the professional mentor, in particular, was exceptional. They ensured we knew that we could come to them at any time, with any issues. The professional mentor knew us, as individuals, and cared about our time at The Marvell College, our wellbeing, and us getting the most from the placement as possible. My mentoring in science was phenomenal. Time was taken for me every morning before school started, checking in to see how prepared I was for the day. My mentor would make time for me every day after school, to reflect on the day together, troubleshoot any issues and highlight the successes. Lesson feedback from my mentor was always immediate, with full feedback never more than a day later. This really helped me focus on areas for improvement whilst the lesson was still fresh in my mind. My mentor would highlight areas that I could have taught differently to have more impact, then they would arrange a time for them to show me how this worked in practice. Not just giving me areas for improvement, but also practical tips and modelling of how it could be improved. I can't tell you how much this benefited me. All members of the department were approachable, friendly and helpful. The staff room was a brilliant place to be, with a real sense of community and shared purpose. Colleagues sharing techniques for behaviour management with certain students, sharing resources and ideas for teaching certain concepts that they had previously found successful. I was invited along to all departmental meetings and CPD sessions and not once did I ever feel like a trainee. I felt like I was part of the department, part of the team. I had the opportunity to support my mentor with two school trips during my placement, something which I had not experienced previously. I feel immensely thankful that I was lucky enough to spend time on placement at The Marvell College. If the school for my ECT years is half as welcoming and supportive as The Marvell College, that will be a result!" |
| Lauren Kerr Teacher of Maths | "I have had a fantastic experience here at The Marvell College, and I am excited to continue work with the maths team and the professional mentor next year! Over the last 7 months I have had continuous support from my mentor and my professional mentor, they are always there to answer any questions and give feedback. The department have all been really welcoming and offered lots of support and guidance throughout the year. The Marvell College has made my teacher training experience very positive and has given me great experience and memories I will always remember!"

| Sean McManus Teacher of Maths | "The Marvell College has been a brilliant placement school to allow me to learn and develop as a teacher. The staff and department have been very supportive and helpful, with additional training and development opportunities. There is a brilliant culture which has been built at the school, with the students always at the heart of everything. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at The Marvell College and look forward to starting my ECT years here in September." |
| Poppy English Teacher of Design and Technology | "I have had a wonderful training year at The Marvell College. I have thoroughly enjoyed it here and I am so sad to be leaving. My mentor has been amazing. They are a credit to the school and the ADT department. Their support and excellent practice is second to none. I have learnt so much in this year from them and all the excellent staff in the school. The professional mentor has also been excellent; she makes time for us all and has made the year brilliant. The Marvell College has supported me to be able to shine, progress and grow as a teacher; embarking on a career that supports and allows young people to thrive. A huge thank you again to everyone at The Marvell College for a wonderful training year." |
