Modern Foreign Languages: French and Spanish

Studying Modern Foreign Languages enables pupils to explore, learn, and connect with people from diverse cultures and traditions. Through the study of French and Spanish, pupils gain a deeper understanding of the wider world and develop the skills to communicate confidently and effectively in another language.

Curriculum Intent

Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, foster ambition, and broaden pupils’ horizons by exposing them to different cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. We provide a rich and engaging learning experience that promotes the enjoyment of languages while equipping pupils with the ability to communicate meaningfully in both French and Spanish.

Pupils study a variety of themes that reflect real-life contexts, including Our World, Social Issues, Sport and Free Time Activities, and Work and Jobs. Through these topics, they not only learn linguistic structures and vocabulary but also explore global issues and cultural diversity, developing respect and empathy for others.

Our Approach

  • Communication
In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to communicate across cultures is invaluable. Our curriculum encourages pupils to understand and appreciate different societies, traditions, and beliefs, helping them to become open-minded, globally aware citizens.
  • Ambition
Proficiency in another language is one of the most sought-after skills in today’s job market. By studying French and Spanish, pupils gain a competitive edge and open the door to a wide range of career opportunities, both in the UK and internationally.
  • Transferable Skills
Language learning nurtures essential life skills such as memory retention, problem-solving, critical thinking, and effective communication. These skills support academic success across the curriculum, linking to and enhancing performance in subjects such as English, Geography, Mathematics, PSHE, and Religious Education.
  • Confidence
Learning to speak another language empowers pupils to step outside their comfort zones. It builds resilience, confidence, and independence, while also providing opportunities for travel, study, and employment abroad.

Through the study of French and Spanish, pupils at our school not only acquire language proficiency but also develop as thoughtful, confident, and globally-minded young people ready to thrive in a multicultural world.
