Studying geography enables students to develop a lifelong curiosity about places, people and the environment.

Geography Curriculum intent

The Geography curriculum is designed to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Through exploration of the physical properties of the earths surface and human societies spread across it we aim to produce inquisitive geographers equipped to make decisions about global futures.

We focus on the following areas within Geography;

Critical thinking. Students are challenged to think creatively and sustainably in order to address and solve current world issues affecting people and the environment.

Explanation and evaluation. Students learn how to explain geographical concepts and processes. We build confidence in decision making skills which helps students to develop reasoned arguments using inference and evidence.

Cartographical and graphical techniques. Developing students’ ability to select and construct appropriate graphs and charts to present data. The importance of numerical and statistical skills within a Geographical context are reinforced in both key stages.

Fieldwork skills. Opportunities are given to develop the ability to collect, process and analyse data in both human and physical environments, before assessing the validity of findings to reach evidenced conclusions.

Literacy. Developing reading skills and using specialist geographical vocabulary is embedded into the curriculum, ensuring students have the skills to communicate their ideas effectively.
