Modern Languages French GCSE

At the Marvell College pupils follow the KS3 course in Y7 and Y8. Pupils follow text books Studio 1 in Y7 and Studio 2 in Y8. Topics studied in Y7 are: personal details, school, hobbies, where you live and holidays. Topics taught in Y8 are TV, Paris, identity and local area. Pupils are prepared for the subsequent GCSE course in Y9-11 through ensuring they build up a sound knowledge of core grammar and vocabulary to prepare them for deeper learning in KS4. This includes exposure to past, present and future tenses. They are assessed using GCSE-style assessments to help further support them with this. Pupils are taught through a variety of engaging activities and wherever possible a cultural dynamic is added to the lessons.

Many employers now ask for ability in a modern foreign language.

Learning a foreign language is an essential skill to enable you to gain maximum opportunity in the future when applying for college or training courses and for jobs.

French is offered to GCSE level. Students use a range of resources to enable them to work individually as well as in small groups.

The emphasis is on communication, using the same four skills as in KS3:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

During the three year course, pupils must submit two writing tasks and two speaking tasks. The best pieces, from a range prepared in class, will be submitted. Listening and reading skills are tested by exams in Year 11.

It is a multilingual world - not everyone speaks English. 94% of the world does not speak English as their first language. 75% of the world does not speak English at all.
